Aizawl, May 12, 2025,Virthli 9ONP): In a concerted effort to enhance disaster preparedness and mitigate landslide risks in the Aizawl region, Minister for Disaster Management and Rehabilitation (DM&R), Prof. Lalnilawma, led an inspection team comprising experts and technical personnel to various vulnerable locations around the city yesterday.
The delegation included Er. Manthan Chauhan, Senior Manager of Maccaferri Geo-technical Solutions Pvt. Ltd., and Dr. C. Sawmliana, Chief Scientist at the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research – Central Institute of Mining & Fuel Research (CSIR-CIMFR). The team conducted site visits to Pukpui, Lengpui, Ngaizel, and Hlimen, where landslides and structural instabilities have been reported or are anticipated. The experts are tasked with identifying risk-prone zones and proposing appropriate engineering and scientific interventions to ensure greater public safety.
Maccaferri, an Italian company established in 1879, is globally recognized for its advanced geo-technical solutions. Notably, the company developed the ‘Gabion Wall’ in 1893 a structure widely used in over 140 countries for slope stabilization and erosion control in hazardous terrain.
Earlier today, under the supervision of Aizawl District Deputy Commissioner Er. Lalhriatpuia, the team visited Pukpui and Lengpui to assess active landslide zones. The inspection was attended by senior officials including the CEO of ADDMA, representatives from the Public Works Department, DM&R, Geology & Mining Department, Mizoram University geologists, officials from the Information & Public Relations Department, as well as members of the Village Council and the Young Mizo Association (YMA) from the Lengpui area.
Further inspections are scheduled to be conducted at Ngaizel and Hlimen today. A follow-up meeting, chaired by the DM&R Minister, will be held later in the day to deliberate on the findings and develop a strategic response plan.
