Lunglei, May 22, 2025, Virthli (ONP): The Local Council of Electric Veng in Mizoram has taken a significant step by conducting an identity verification drive for Myanmar nationals residing in the locality. The initiative was carried out last night following growing concerns over the presence of undocumented migrants in the area.
According to the council, individuals who have been residing in the community without valid identity documents were requested to either present their Myanmar-issued identification or clarify their status. The council expressed concerns that undocumented individuals had continued to reside in the locality despite earlier discussions encouraging transparency and documentation.
Council leaders cited repeated incidents and tensions arising from cultural and logistical differences between the local residents and migrants, which they believe could potentially lead to social issues. As a result, they decided to verify and document the identities of the Myanmar nationals currently living within their jurisdiction.
The council reported that 113 Myanmar nationals are currently residing in Electric Veng. They further noted that while some residents had previously disputed the status of these individuals, last night's exercise aimed to clarify their origin and legal standing. Those unable to produce identification were advised to obtain the necessary documentation as early as possible.

Officials also stated that providing proper documentation to those verified is a crucial step toward ensuring their continued stay in the community without complications. The local council emphasized that the move is not intended as a crackdown but as a preventive measure to maintain social harmony and administrative transparency.
