Dibrugarh, May 24, 2025, Virthli (ONP): In a significant breakthrough against insurgent activities in Northeast India, Tinsukia police have apprehended United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) commander Rupam Asom near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
Acting on intelligence inputs, law enforcement agencies launched a targeted operation in the dense jungle areas bordering the two states, where Rupam Asom and his associates were reportedly hiding. The operation led to his arrest and the seizure of arms, ammunition, and other incriminating materials from his possession.
Rupam Asom has been a prominent figure in ULFA-I's operations in eastern Assam, particularly in the Tinsukia district. He is alleged to have orchestrated an extensive extortion network in the Bordumsa area, targeting local businesses and tea estate managers. A police source described him as "the main person under whose instruction the whole extortion business has been running in eastern Assam," noting that he has been a significant challenge for law enforcement over the past several years.
Furthermore, Rupam Asom is the prime suspect in the 2018 killing of Bhaskar Kalita, the officer-in-charge of Bordumsa police station. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has previously charge-sheeted him, along with six other ULFA(I) insurgents, in connection with this case.
Following his arrest, police have intensified operations in the bordering regions to locate and apprehend other members of the ULFA(I) group. This development is seen as a significant step towards curbing insurgent activities and restoring peace in the region.
