Aizawl/CCpur, May 16, 2018: Reflecting the spirit of unity, Hmar people on Wednesday observed their ‘Martyrs’ Day’ with great enthusiasm and reverence in different parts of the country while paying rich tributes and high regards to the “heroes” who had laid down their lives for the “cause of the tribe” in their fight for “self-determination”.
Hmars are one of the major tribes of Chin-Kuki-Mizo ethnic group.
Reports reaching here said that the Hmar Martyrs’ Day was observed in Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya and and in some metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore. In Mizoram, the day was observed with great enthusiasm in Hmar dominated villages such as Saipum, Saiphai, Phainuam, Vairengte, Mauchar, Sakawrdai and Rengtekawn besides Aizawl.
It is worth mentioning that every Hmar household has their traditional shawls flying within their respective compound the entire day to mark the Hmar Martyrs’ Day. The day was first observed in 1990.
Reports reaching here also said that the grand observance of the 28th edition of Hmar Martyrs’ Day was held at Saikawt Play Ground in Manipur’s Churachandpur district wherein Mizoram Home minister R. Lalzirliana graced the daylong event as chief guest. He was the first minister from Mizoram to have graced the Hmar Martyrs’ Day.
According to the reports, many Hmar leaders including three MLAs from Manipur- Ginsuanhau Zou, Vungzain Valte and Dr. Chaltonlien Amo participated in the programme to remember and commemorate the invaluable sacrifices made by the Hmar heroes.
Speaking on the occasion, Mizoram Home minister R. Lalzirliana expressed happiness over the signing of peace accord between the Mizoram government and Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic), the reports said. The Mizoram minister also said that the Mizoram government has been taking massive effort to legislate the Sinlung Hills Council Bill and a special assembly session will be summoned in June for the purpose, the reports also said. R Lalzirliana further said that the Mizoram government will finalise names of 14 councilors on the recommendation of Hmar leaders to run and monitor the interim Silung Hills Council before elections to the council are held.
“The government is committed to resolve the Hmar problems and establish a strong and reliable council to fulfill the political aspirations of the Hmar people in Mizoram,” he said.
Lalzirliana, who was accompanied by a host of officials from Mizoram, said that due rehabilitation package would be given to all the HPC(D) cadres who had laid down arms recently and the government would arrange skill development training for the cadres.
During the observance, the Mizoram Home minister also paid floral tribute to the Hmar ‘martyrs’ and graced the Hmar football trophy tournament organized to mark the day.
