Imphal, Sept 27: In a decisive step toward achieving a drug-free Manipur, the Manipur Police on Saturday carried out a large-scale Drug Disposal Programme at the state-of-the-art Shija Common Biomedical Waste Treatment Facility in Lamdeng, Imphal West district.
The operation marked a milestone in the state’s war on drugs, with a staggering quantity of contraband items destroyed in an eco-friendly manner. The disposed narcotics included 6 kilograms of heroin powder, 87 kilograms of brown sugar, 22 kilograms of WY tablets, 0.047 kilogram of SP capsules, 36 kilograms of pseudoephedrine, and 182 kilograms of ganja.
According to officials, the drugs were seized in multiple operations conducted by various district police units, the Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) wing, and other security agencies over the past months.
The disposal was carried out in the presence of Director General of Police (DGP) Manipur, Shri Rajiv Singh, IPS, along with senior officials of the Manipur Police.
Speaking at the programme, DGP Rajiv Singh emphasized the state police’s unwavering commitment to combating the narcotics menace. He lauded the relentless efforts of police personnel working on the frontlines in drug interdiction and enforcement operations, often under challenging circumstances and at significant personal risk.
“We are determined to achieve a drug-free Manipur. The fight against drug trafficking and abuse requires not only the dedication of law enforcement agencies but also the active support of the community. I urge the people to share information about drug dealers and peddlers so that together, we can eradicate this menace,” Singh stated.
The DGP further outlined the police’s long-term vision of strengthening intelligence, enhancing coordination with central agencies, and intensifying awareness campaigns to prevent drug abuse among the youth.
The programme also highlighted the role of scientific and environmentally safe methods in the destruction of narcotics. By partnering with the Shija Biomedical Waste Treatment Facility, the Manipur Police ensured that the disposal process adhered to safety and ecological standards, setting an example for other states.
Later in the day, DGP Singh visited Lamshang Police Station where he interacted with the police personnel, including women officers, Commando units, Manipur Rifles/India Reserve Battalion (MR/IRB) personnel, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) deployed at various outposts under Lamshang PS. The visit was aimed at boosting morale and addressing concerns of personnel operating in sensitive areas.
The initiative comes at a time when Manipur continues to battle the scourge of drug trafficking, which has been a persistent issue due to its geographical proximity to the infamous “Golden Triangle.” The state police have intensified operations as part of the government’s “War on Drugs” campaign, targeting both interstate smuggling networks and local distribution chains.
With Saturday’s disposal of over 330 kilograms of contraband substances, the Manipur Police reiterated its firm stance against narcotics and its determination to safeguard the future of the state’s younger generation.
