Shillong, September 13, 2025: Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr. Donwa Dethwelson Lapang, fondly known as Maheh Lapang, passed away, leaving behind a rich legacy of public service and leadership. He was 90.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed deep sorrow at the veteran leader’s demise, describing him as a “true leader of the people” whose decades-long political career was dedicated to the welfare and progress of Meghalaya.
Dr. Lapang, a senior Congress leader during most of his career, was elected Chief Minister of Meghalaya four times. He played a pivotal role in shaping the political and developmental landscape of the state, particularly in Ri Bhoi District, which continues to regard him as one of its own.
“His commitment to public service spanned decades. His role in shaping Ri Bhoi District remains unforgettable, and he continues to be revered by the people there,” Sangma said in his tribute, adding that Lapang’s statesmanship and compassion would continue to inspire future generations.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family.
