NEW DELHI, September 4, 2025: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to deliberate on critical issues concerning the state’s administrative autonomy, cultural recognition, and identity safeguards.
During the meeting, Sangma strongly advocated for the creation of a separate cadre for Meghalaya, which currently shares a joint cadre with Assam. He stressed that a distinct cadre would ensure better administrative efficiency and autonomy for the state.
The Chief Minister also urged the Union Government to include Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, describing it as a vital step towards the recognition, preservation, and promotion of Meghalaya’s indigenous languages.
Highlighting the state’s long-standing demand, Sangma pressed for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya to safeguard the interests, identity, and cultural heritage of its people.

In addition, he proposed naming a road in New Delhi after the late P. A. Sangma, former Lok Sabha Speaker and one of India’s most respected statesmen, as a tribute to his towering contributions to Indian politics and the Northeast region.
Sangma expressed gratitude to Amit Shah for his “support and guidance” on these matters and voiced optimism that the Centre would positively consider Meghalaya’s aspirations.
