Aizawl, July 1, 2025: The Mizo Students’ Union (MSU) has demanded the immediate cancellation of a recent notification issued by the Directorate of Higher & Technical Education (H&TE), which sought to extend the services of 29 unqualified part-time assistant professors in Mizoram government colleges.
The notification in question, dated February 21, 2025, proposed to continue their engagement beyond February 28, 2025. MSU strongly opposed this move, calling it a direct violation of the earlier order dated August 9, 2024, which had clearly stated: “No more extension of engagement will be done after 28.02.2025.”
In protest, MSU burned a copy of the notification during a demonstration held earlier today in front of the H&TE Directorate Office in Aizawl.
Addressing the gathering, MSU President B. Lalkhawngaihzuala stated:
“While we understand that the government may have previously engaged unqualified lecturers on humanitarian grounds, continuing such appointments undermines the quality of education. Education must be shaped by qualified individuals - not extended out of misplaced sympathy.”
He added that the MSU had already submitted several representations on the issue, including a press conference held on March 13, 2025, multiple appeals to the Education Minister, and a formal complaint to the Chief Minister on June 9, 2025. However, the issue remained unaddressed.
Frustrated by the lack of response, MSU launched a protest outside the H&TE office today, demanding complete withdrawal of the extension order.

Lalkhawngaihzuala reiterated that MSU is not targeting any individual personally, but is opposing the policy of allowing unqualified persons to continue teaching - a practice he said compromises the future of Mizo students.
He also warned that if the government fails to act swiftly, the union is prepared to escalate its agitation across the state.
