Minister Hmar Holds Key Meetings with Central Officials; NCB Zonal Office in Aizawl Likely

New Delhi, July 1, 2025: Mizoram Excise & Narcotics Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar held key meetings in New Delhi on Monday to push for stronger measures against drug trafficking, particularly along the Myanmar border. His discussions with Director General of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Pu Anurag Garg, focused on intensifying efforts to combat the rising threat of narcotics smuggling through Mizoram.

Highlighting the state's vulnerability as a key transit point in the region’s drug network, Minister Hmar emphasized the urgent need for enhanced intelligence-sharing, increased coordination, and regular training for Mizoram’s Excise & Narcotics personnel.

In response, DG Anurag Garg assured that the NCB is actively considering setting up a Zonal Office in Aizawl to streamline and strengthen anti-narcotics operations in the Northeast. He also expressed willingness to organize capacity-building programs in partnership with Mizoram and other NE states to address the growing drug menace.

Minister Hmar also met with Dr. Rajendra Kumar, Secretary (Border Management), Ministry of Home Affairs, to discuss cross-border smuggling and strategies to tighten surveillance and inter-agency coordination.

In a related engagement, he met Dr. Pallavi Jain Govil, Secretary of Youth Affairs, to discuss youth-focused initiatives aimed at preventing drug abuse and increasing sports and development programs in Mizoram. Plans for setting up a Youth Hostel in Aizawl to support such efforts were also discussed.

The Minister’s visit also included a courtesy meeting with Pu Moses Chalai, Secretary of the Department of Public Enterprises under the Ministry of Finance, to explore central support for Mizoram’s development, given the state's limited budget.

Minister Hmar’s engagements reflect Mizoram’s proactive push for systemic solutions to curb drug trafficking and youth vulnerability, amid increasing cases of drug-related crimes in the region.
