Manipur Naga Youth Organisation Opposes Tiger Road, Cites Ethnic and Security Concerns

VIRTHLI

Imphal, July 15, 2025: The Manipur Naga Youth Organisation (MNYO) has strongly opposed the proposed construction of the Tiger/German Road from Motbung (Kangpokpi district) to Churachandpur, citing serious socio-political implications, ethnic sensitivities, and unresolved land disputes.

TIGER ROAD

In a press statement issued by its Media and Publicity Wing on Monday, the MNYO objected not only to the location and manner of the proposed road project but also to the name “Tiger/German Road”, alleging it holds associations with Kuki armed groups, making it “highly objectionable” in the current ethnic climate.

The organisation cautioned that initiating construction without proper consultation with affected communities and ground verification of disputed land could exacerbate ethnic tensions and undermine peace in already fragile regions. “Unilateral construction in disputed zones,” it warned, “may open a Pandora’s Box of fresh communal unrest.”

Represents Multiple Naga Tribes

The MNYO claims to represent several Naga tribes residing across the region between Motbung and the Loktak Project area in Churachandpur. These include the Liangmai, Rongmei (Kabui), Poumai, Mao, Kharam, Aimol, Chiru, Kom, Inpui, Koireng, and Chothe Nagas, who the organisation says have long defended their ancestral lands.

While clarifying that it supports development and road connectivity, the MNYO insisted that any such projects must be inclusive, transparent, and rooted in justice and mutual respect. It noted that infrastructure imposed without community engagement may defeat the intended developmental purpose and deepen ethnic divides.

Concerns Over Kuki SoO Camp Relocations

The MNYO also raised alarm over reports of Kuki Suspension of Operation (SoO) camps being considered for relocation to mixed or Naga-majority areas, including Loktak Project zone, Kangchup foothills, Koubru range, and Kotlen along NH-37. The group urged the Ministry of Home Affairs and state authorities to:

Confine SoO camps to Kuki-dominated areas

Remove camps located within or near Naga territories

Avoid setting up camps near national highways, key installations, or strategic zones

According to the MNYO, placing armed groups in sensitive areas near civilian populations increases the risk of conflict and insecurity for local communities.

Urges Government to Uphold Justice and Peace

The statement further alleged bias in land-related decisions by district authorities in Kuki-majority areas, which it claimed often disadvantage Naga communities. It stressed the need for fair and just governance to preserve peaceful coexistence and inter-community harmony.

Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful development, the MNYO concluded by urging all authorities to respect traditional land rights, prioritize inclusive consultation, and avoid actions that could jeopardize the delicate ethnic balance in Manipur.
