Guwahati, July 4, 2025: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the erection of the first boundary pillars in areas previously disputed between Assam and Meghalaya, calling it a symbol of clarity and peace between the two northeastern states.
Taking to social media, the Chief Minister noted that when Meghalaya was carved out of Assam in 1972, much of the boundary remained undefined, leading to frequent tensions and confusion. However, a major breakthrough came in 2022, when both states signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
“Six out of twelve disputed areas have now been resolved,” Sarma said, adding that “boundary works are underway” and the erection of the first official pillars signifies real progress. The initiative is expected to bring administrative clarity and improve governance in regions previously caught in jurisdictional ambiguity.
“These pillars mean that people and officials now have exact clarity on which state they belong to, enabling governance to finally reach these once grey areas,” Sarma said.
