Guwahati, June 10, 2025: In a landmark development for higher education in Assam, Jagiroad College in Morigaon district has been granted autonomous status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for a period of ten years, starting from the academic year 2025-26 to 2034-35.
The decision, approved during the UGC’s meeting on May 14, 2025, follows a proposal submitted by the college and the recommendation of the Standing Committee on Autonomous Colleges. Jagiroad College is affiliated with Gauhati University.
In a letter addressed to the Registrar of Gauhati University, UGC directed the University to issue the necessary notification within 30 days and to ensure that the college abides by the UGC Regulations for Autonomous Colleges, 2023. These regulations outline conditions regarding academic, administrative, and financial autonomy.
Reacting to the announcement, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the faculty, students, and alumni of Jagiroad College. “This is a proud moment for Assam’s education sector,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The autonomous status empowers the college to frame its own syllabus, conduct exams, and declare results independently, while remaining affiliated to the parent university for the award of degrees.
