New Delhi, May 13, 2025, Virthli (ONP): India has emerged as the world’s third-largest producer of electricity from wind and solar energy, overtaking Germany and solidifying its position as a global leader in renewable energy. Only China and the United States now produce more electricity from these sources than India, according to the latest edition of the Global Electricity Review 2025, released by the international energy research group Ember.

The report reveals that globally, wind and solar energy accounted for 15% of total electricity generation. India contributed 10% to this global output, underscoring its growing influence in the clean energy sector.

Domestically, India’s electricity mix is becoming increasingly greener. According to the review, 18% of the nation’s electricity is now derived from clean energy sources - 10% from wind and solar, and 8% from hydropower.

India Ranks Third Globally in Wind and Solar Power Generation, Surpassing Germany

A significant highlight of India’s renewable energy progress is the addition of 24 gigawatts of new solar capacity in 2024, more than double the capacity added in 2023. This surge reflects the country’s commitment to expanding its renewable infrastructure and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Experts attribute the rapid growth to favorable policies, large-scale solar park developments, and increased investment in clean technologies. With this momentum, India is expected to play a crucial role in the global transition to sustainable energy systems in the coming decade.
