Guwahati, May 8, 2025, Virthli (ONP): In a major public health milestone, Assam has achieved a record-breaking decline in its Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR), according to the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) report for 2019–21. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the breakthrough via social media on Wednesday, hailing it as a “Huge Breakthrough for Assam.”
As per the SRS 2019–21 data, Assam’s MMR has dropped from 195 to 167 a remarkable 28-point fall, the highest reduction recorded by any Indian state during this period. The state, which previously had the highest MMR in the country, has now shed that status.
Alongside this achievement, Assam’s Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) has also shown improvement, decreasing from 38 to 36. This steady gain reflects continued efforts in strengthening maternal and child healthcare across the state.
“This milestone would not have been possible without the visionary leadership and unwavering support of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji,” Chief Minister Sarma said in his post. He also expressed deep gratitude to the state’s healthcare workers, ASHA workers, and all stakeholders who contributed to this progress.
Public health experts attribute the success to enhanced institutional deliveries, better antenatal care, improved health infrastructure, and the dedicated work of frontline health workers under various central and state health schemes.
The achievement comes as a significant morale boost for Assam’s public health machinery and sets a positive precedent for future interventions aimed at reducing preventable maternal and child deaths.
