36th Hmar Martyrs’ Football Tournament Kicks Off at Hmarkhawlien Playground

Hmarkhawlien, May 4, 2025, Virthli (ONP): The 36th edition of the Hmar Martyrs’ Football Tournament officially kicked off yesterday at the Hmarkhawlien Playground, drawing enthusiastic participation from across the region. Organized to honor the memory of Hmar martyrs, the tournament has long been a unifying cultural and sporting event for the Hmar community. A grand opening was ceremony held at Hmarkhawlien Playground under the initiative of the HSA Barak Valley Joint Headquarters. The opening ceremony was graced by two esteemed village headmen from the oldest Hmar settlements Pu Lalmurthang, Headman of Saihmar, and Pu Lalsiemmawi Khawzawl, Headman of Saisel both of whom delivered inspiring messages centered on unity and shared purpose. The Organising Board, HMARTOB, expressed heartfelt gratitude for their presence and valuable support.

The Organising Board (HMARTOB 2025) has also announced that Martyrs' Day 2025, to be observed on May 16, will be commemorated with a solemn and meaningful closing ceremony at Hmarkhawlien Playground.

36th Hmar Martyrs’ Football Tournament Opening Ceremony

A total of 45 teams have registered for this year's tournament.  The opening day featured two competitive fixtures, with K. Phailien defeating Chikhur FC 3–1 in the tournament’s inaugural match at 2:30 PM, followed by HSA Biete securing a 1–0 victory over Brothers FC at 3:30 PM.

On Monday, May 5, five matches are lined up beginning at 9:30 AM, with teams such as Sinlung B, Missionveng B, DGSA FC, and Missionveng A among the contenders. Similarly, Tuesday, May 6 will feature another packed schedule with matchups including Zionstreet C vs Hebrai Veng B and DHSC Veteran vs Sinlung A.

Wednesday and Thursday will conclude the first round, with six matches each day. Highlights include prominent local teams such as CR7 FC, Tribal Editor, DHSC A, and HSA K. Bethel entering the fray.

Organizers have reminded all teams to adhere strictly to reporting times. Draws for subsequent rounds will be conducted following the completion of the initial phase.

The tournament not only promotes sportsmanship and unity but also serves as a solemn tribute to the community's martyrs, whose legacy continues to inspire future generations.
