AIZAWL, April 7 - Hmar People’s Convention-Democratic (HPC-D) cadres who entered Mizoram after leaving their hideout in Manipur received heroes’ welcome in the Hmar-dominated villages in northeastern parts of the State today. The militants, numbering 103, were ferried across the Tuiruang river that borders Manipur and Mizoram and arrived at Zilthawchhuah village inside Mizoram. From there they were transported in four buses and headed towards Sesawng village where the laying down of arms ceremony would be held on April 13.

The HPC-D cadres received rousing welcome-home ceremony in the villages they passed on the way. They will be lodged at Central Training Institute (CTI), the headquarters of Mizoram Home Guards, which is the venue for the laying down of arms.

The arms surrender ceremony, earlier scheduled for April 12, has been deferred to April 13, in view of the convenience of Mizoram Home Minister R Lalzirliana who is now on a medical check up outside the State.

Intelligence sources said that HPC (D) militants would lay down around 48 weapons including sophisticated arms like AK-47 assault rifles and US-made M-16 rifles and a huge quantity of ammunition.

The HPC (D) signed memorandum of settlement (MoS) with Mizoram Government on Monday last.

The Hmar accord was expected to bring lasting peace and amicable solution to the vexed Hmar political imbroglio.
