Aizawl, May 18 2014 : Along with their brothers in different parts of India, the Hmars, one of the largest among Mizo tribes observed Martyrs' Day in Aizaw on last Friday to pay homage to their heroes who have lost their lives for the cause of the Hmar nation.

In Aizawl the Martyrs' Day observation was held at I & PR Auditorium where many people gathered to remember and commemorate the sacrifices made by the Hmar Volunteers in their fight for Autonomous District Council in Mizoram.

.CLalrambuatsaiha, Ex-President, MJA graced the occasion as special invitees.

The grand Martyrs' Day observation in Mizoram however, was held at Ratu in Sinlung Hills Development Council (SHDC) area with grandeur football tournament - Martyrs' Trophy final match being played on the occasion.

Hmingchungnunga, Chairman SHDC graced the function as chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion C.Lalrambuatsaiha said he is grateful to have been invited on such important occasion by Hmar leaders.

He said that the so called Martyrs' Day is one of such occasion which the whole world has valued most and even the government of India paid great respect and importance to those freedom fighters.

"Unity is the most important need of the Hmar community in particular and Mizo as a whole.

It comes mostly from honesty, diligent and the fear of God", C.Lalrambuatsaiha said while urging the gatherers to be honest and hardworking so as to be an example for others.

He also asked the Hmar community not to made division among themselves by trivial matters.

The Hmar Martyrs' Day was also observed with great enthusiasm in different part of North East India- Manipur, Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya and in some Indian metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Mumbai etc as well.

In Manipur the main commemorative event was held at Rengkai during the closing ceremony of the Martyr's trophy (football tournament).

There was an eye-catching demonstration of traditional dances featuring the heroic conduct of the Hmar men prior to the kick-off while the players, officials and the crowd that gathered on the occasion paid homage to the departed souls.

Executive Member of the ADC Churachandpur, Lalhossan; Deputy Director of the agriculture department Phirthangsei Varte and ZEO Churachandpur Joseph Lalrothang graced the tournament's closing ceremony as chief guest, guest of honour and functional president respectively.

It is worth mentioning that every Hmar households have their traditional shawls flying within their respective compound the entire day to mark their observance of Hmar Martyrs' day.

In commemoration of the sacrifices made by the HPC for their people, Hmar Martyrs' Day has been observing since lately.

It was first observed in 1989 within HPC volunteers alone.

Later on the HPC Executive meeting held in December 1989 at Hmarkhawlien, Assam decided to observe May 16 as Martyrs' Day among the whole Hmar Community in order to remember and pay homage to those heroes who have lost their lives during HPC movement between 1989 and 1994 .
