Hmar observe Martyrs' Day

Lamka, May 16 2011: In commemoration of the sacrifices made by the HPC for their people, Hmar martyr's day, was observed today in all areas dominated by the community.

The main commemorative event, however, was held at Rengkai during the closing ceremony of the Martyr's trophy (football tournament) .

There was an eye-catching demonstration of traditional dances featuring the heroic conduct of the Hmar men prior to the kick-off while the players, officials and the crowd that gathered on the occasion paid homage to the departed souls.

Rengkai XI, one of the two finalists thrashed their opponent, the Saikot XI 4-3 in a tie break and went on claiming the Martyr's trophy and other booty including a cash award of Rs.30,000 .



The runner-up walked away with Rs.15,000 .

Executive Member of the ADC Churachandpur, Lalhossan; Deputy Director of the agriculture department Phirthangsei Varte and ZEO Churachandpur Joseph Lalrothang graced the tournament's closing ceremony as chief guest, guest of honour and functional president respectively.

It is worth mentioning that every Hmar households have their traditional shawls flying within their respective compound the entire day to mark their observance of Hmar Martyrs' day.

  1. On second thought, am quite amaze that Hmar Martyrs' Day is all about "In commemoration of the sacrifices made by the HPC for their people".
    Times were when the 'HPC Movement' was the manifestation of the ambition and aspiration of the Hmar people. It is,indeed,in respect of those who were martyred for that cause that i observe Martyrs' Day.
    I salute them and may their soul rest in peace.
    What happened since then? It will be taking unnecessary risk to talk about what i do not observe in respect. But i will like to think aloud,'the movement and the offshoot organizations,are they relevant for the present and for all Hmars? my answer is,they are redundant(no offense)'.
