Bomb blast in Manipur, 3 injured

IMPHAL, May 28 : Coinci-ding with the controversial visit of Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to Se-napati, a powerful car bomb blast ripped through the Autonomous District Council office at Khuman Lampak at about 9.45 this morning.



Three people including two girls were injured in the blast, one critically.

The injured victims have been identified as Boinu Singson (45) w/o Lalboi Singson, Boinu’s daughters Lucy Singson (17) and Nichin Singson (10).

Boinu sustained injuries on the right side of the head while Lucy sustained minor injuries on the back.

Nichin was hit by shrap-nels on the back near the waist. She is undergoing treatment in critical condition at JNIMS.

The car (Maruti 800) fitted with the bomb has been totally devastated except for its engine. It was found blown to pieces near the compound wall of the ADC office complex. The explosion also created a huge hole on the ground.  Walls made by GI sheets of the houses built near the ADC office were also totally ripped apart.

The entrance gate of the office was also broken by the impact of the blast.

Small parts of the bomb-fitted car and gravels thrown up by the explosion were strewn within and beyond the ADC office complex.  Moments after the explosion, security forces deployed there and Imphal West District Police closed both the southern and northern gates of Khuman Lampak complex, and denied entry to all people.

A police source informed that an unidentified man who spoke Manipuri and wearing a white coloured checked T-shirt drove a Maruti 800 car into the ADC office at about 9.20 am today.

The man entered the house of the office chowkidar Jirene (19) and enquired about the ADC officials. The chowkidar replied that no official was present as today was a holiday. Then the man left the car and went away.  It was about ten minutes later that the car exploded with a thundering sound.

Bomb squad and forensic team have inspected the blast site. The police source claimed that they have certain suspects and that their identities will be established soon.

Nichin’s father Lalboi said that he was working as Assistant Cashier at Khuman Lampak PWD office. “My daughter Jirene is working as chowkidar in the ADC office. Later, IPR Minister TN Haokip, Works Minister K Ranjit and Health Minister L Jayantakumar came and inspected the blast site.

On the other hand, MPCC president Gaikha-ngam visited the injured victims at JNIMS.
