The Tawnlopuon is a traditional breast cloth of the Hmar tribe, worn exclusively by women and regarded with deep cultural reverence. The term Tawnlo translates to “breast covering,” and the cloth carries sacred connotations - traditionally, it was never to be touched by men. Symbolizing dignity, modesty, and the sanctity of womanhood, the Tawnlopuon formed an essential part of traditional Hmar attire and remains a cultural marker of feminine identity and respect.

Design Features of Tawnlo Puon:
Visually striking yet simple, the Tawnlopuon features a black or deep indigo base adorned with horizontal stripes in white and maroon or red. The alternating bands are evenly arranged, giving the fabric a harmonious rhythm and aesthetic balance. Each colour bears symbolic meaning - white for purity and virtue, red for strength and vitality, and black for grace and resilience. The uncluttered design sets it apart from festive textiles, reflecting refinement and quiet strength.

Technical Features of Tawnlopuon:
Traditionally handwoven on a backstrap loom, the Tawnlopuon was originally crafted from handspun cotton dyed with natural pigments such as indigo and plant-based reds. The fabric is woven in a single width, tailored to wrap securely around the upper torso without sewing. In contemporary times, weavers have transitioned to mill-spun cotton yarns, yet the weaving technique and traditional motifs remain unchanged.

Cultural and Contemporary Use:
While once reserved as a sacred breast cloth never to be touched by men, the Tawnlopuon has evolved in its use. Despite this evolution, it continues to symbolize feminine dignity and cultural continuity within Hmar society.

The Tawnlopuon originates from Manipur and is worn by Hmar communities across Mizoram, Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura.
