The Ngotlawng is one of the most distinguished traditional garments among the Hmar community. Design & Features of Ngotlawng Puon:

The Ngotlawng is a handwoven cloth, crafted on a backstrap loom with remarkable precision. Its defining feature is its white base, representing purity, contrasted with intricate black woven motifs running vertically down the front and the back. These geometric patterns are traditionally woven, not embroidered, showcasing the exceptional skill and aesthetic sensibility of Hmar women weavers.

Traditionally, the Ngotlawng was worn exclusively by unmarried Hmar girls, symbolizing chastity and grace. The cloth is wrapped around the lower body as a skirt (puonbil).

The Ngotlawng is characterized by a white base fabric divided into three vertical panels - two patterned borders flanking a central plain section. The composition reflects a sense of balance and symmetry that is deeply valued in Hmar weaving traditions.

Each of the patterned panels features complex geometric motifs woven in black thread against the white base.
