Puonropui: The Grand Textile of the Hmar People

VIRTHLI

The Puonropui is one of the most magnificent and ornamental textiles of the Hmar people. The term derives from puon meaning “cloth” and ropui meaning “grand” or “glorious.” Traditionally woven in rich hues of deep red, black, green, and gold, it features bold horizontal bands arranged in rhythmic harmony. The design, believed to have emerged around the mid-nineteenth century, reflects the evolution of Hmar weaving artistry. Modern versions often include variations in colour and motif arrangement, showcasing the creativity of contemporary Hmar women weavers.

Technical Features of Puonropui:

Handwoven on a traditional backstrap loom, the Puonropui uses fine cotton or silk yarns dyed in vivid colours. Its most striking feature is the alternating diamond and triangle-like patterns - formed using the extra weft technique. The triangles, arranged in zigzag or flame-like sequences, symbolize lightning, vitality, and dynamic energy, while the central diamond motifs represent balance and unity.

The interplay of these geometric patterns across the red and black base creates a shimmering visual rhythm. Weaving such precision requires mastery, as the cloth combines multiple layers of coloured yarns meticulously counted and interlocked to maintain perfect symmetry.
