UNC Calls for Support for Its Trade Blockade Against Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing

Senapati, 7 September 2025: The United Naga Council (UNC) has called on all Naga communities and democratic organizations to support its trade blockade, set to begin on 8 September 2025. The blockade is a protest against the Government of India’s decision to fence the Indo-Myanmar border, which the council says will permanently divide the Naga homeland and restrict the traditional movement of the people.

In a statement, the UNC denounced the border fencing project as an attack on the unity, culture, and rights of the Naga people. The council emphasized that the fencing plan was approved without consulting affected communities and violates their rights to free movement, as outlined in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

UNC’s Information & Publicity Secretary, H. James Hau, urged Nagas across the region to stand firm in resisting what he described as an “inhuman act” and a deliberate attempt to curb their growth and connection with kin communities across the border. He warned that the blockade is a necessary democratic step in defending the Naga nation’s survival.

The UNC has outlined several demands, including obtaining free, prior, and informed consent for any project affecting Naga land, stopping movement restrictions, and halting border fencing work. The council also called for renewed peace talks with the Government of India to secure early settlement of outstanding issues.

The council’s appeal stresses that the trade blockade is a peaceful, non-violent movement aimed at highlighting the community’s grievances and pressuring authorities to respect the rights of the Naga people.

UNC’s statement concluded with an urgent plea: “Every Naga must remain vigilant and united to resist this injustice. We invite all democratic forces and individuals to stand with us to ensure justice, dignity, and a future for the Naga people.”
