Aizawl, May 11, 2025, Virthli (ONP): According to the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) Bulletin released by the Registrar General of India (May 2025 edition), Mizoram has reported an Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) of 4, making it one of the three states/UTs in India with the lowest IMR. Alongside Mizoram, the states of Manipur and Sikkim have also recorded similarly low figures.
Health Minister Pi Lalrinpuii expressed gratitude for this achievement, stating that it is a significant milestone for Mizoram to maintain such a low IMR, especially when compared to more populous and developed states. She noted that the data reflects the state’s consistent progress in the field of public health.
She also extended appreciation to all stakeholders involved in achieving this outcome—including the Health Department and its field staff, as well as key collaborators under the National Health Mission, Mizoram and the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Programme. Other contributing departments include Women & Child Development, Social Welfare, School Education, Rural Development, PHE, and others who have worked tirelessly to reduce infant mortality.
The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is defined as the number of infant deaths (under one year of age) per 1,000 live births in a year. An IMR of 4 is considered remarkably low, especially compared to the national average IMR of 27. It is important to note that this SRS data is based on 2021 figures.

Experts emphasize that achieving a low IMR reflects a strong and responsive health system. Globally, IMR is one of the most critical indicators of a nation’s health standards and its progress in maternal and child care.
