Dispur, May 8, 2025, Virthli (ONP): The Chief Secretary of Assam laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art 1,000-seater auditorium at Janata Bhawan in Dispur, marking a significant step towards the transformation of the state's administrative hub. The ambitious project, with a sanctioned cost of ₹67.44 crore, is part of the Master Plan for the redevelopment of the Secretariat Complex and Ministers’ Colony, conceptualised under the guidance of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Designed to elevate the administrative and cultural landscape at the heart of Assam's governance, the new auditorium will have a total capacity of 1,013 seats  including 773 across the ground and first floors, and an additional 240-seat balcony.

The project also includes, a modern conference hall, General and VIP lounges, an in-house pantry and accessible restrooms for all.

Aimed at hosting official functions, high-level meetings, and cultural events, the facility is expected to be completed by April 2027.

During the event, architectural firm Design Associates presented the comprehensive Master Plan, which envisions a more inclusive, functional, and future-ready Secretariat campus. Staff and officials were encouraged to contribute ideas for infrastructure development, and a proposal was made to form in-house art, culture, and sports groups to foster engagement and talent within the Secretariat.

The new auditorium is seen as a milestone in enhancing the state’s administrative efficiency while fostering a vibrant cultural atmosphere within government spaces.
