Last rites of 9 'martyrs' to be performed on Nov 30

Churachandpur, November 16 2015: Joint Action Committee (JAC) against "Anti Tribal Bills" Churachandpur has set the date for funeral ceremony for the nine "tribal martyrs" on November 30 after the Government of India assured to take up the issues highlighted by the committee.


According to sources, the JAC along with tribe leaders and civil society organisation leaders has decided that the mortal remains of the nine "martyrs" will be laid to rest on November 30 at ADC Churachandpur Complex, Bungmual village, Churachandpur District.

It may be mentioned that the Ministry of Home Affairs had sent Ashok Prasad, Secretary (Internal Security) to Churachandpur during the height of protests against the three bills passed by the State Assembly.

A team comprising of the Coordination Committee, All Tribal Students` Union Manipur (ATSUM), the Joint Action Committee against Anti-Tribal Bills (JAC) and the Manipur Tribal Forum Delhi (MTFD) also went to Delhi and met with the Home Minister and Central officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs earlier.

The Ministry of Home Affairs have given a "written assurance" on November 9 stating that the matters relating to the three bills will be consulted with all stakeholders including the Manipur Government, the hill and valley people and other parties before arriving at any decision.

The joint meeting of JAC, the tribe leaders, Church leaders, and JPOs was held on Monday and took the decision on performing the last rites of the nine persons killed during the protest.

JAC to boycott Sangai Festival 
The JAC has also resolved to boycott the forthcoming Sangai Festival organised by Government of Manipur in Imphal scheduled to begin from November 21.JAC appealed all the hill districts not to participate in the festival in protest against the policies of the Government of Manipur.

"No individual or organisations is permitted to represent Churachandpur District in the festival and anyone doing so shall be treated as anti-tribal and against the ongoing tribal movement" JAC said.
