Mizoram Speaker Joins Assamese Community in Celebrating Rongali Bihu

Aizawl, 10 May 2025, Virthli ONP): Today marks the celebration of Rongali Bihu, the most prominent cultural festival of the Assamese community. In Mizoram, the festival was joyously observed at the Berawtlang Multipurpose Cultural Complex, drawing members of the Assamese community residing in the state. Mizoram Legislative Assembly Speaker, Pu Lalbiakzama, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

In his address, Speaker Lalbiakzama expressed appreciation for the invitation extended by the Assamese brethren in Mizoram to attend the Rongali Bihu celebration. He remarked that the event symbolised unity and goodwill and conveyed his best wishes to the Assamese community for hosting such a vibrant cultural festivity.

The Speaker acknowledged the significance of Assam as a vital contributor to India’s Northeast, particularly in fostering regional solidarity among the northeastern states. He highlighted that Rongali Bihu is a New Year festival for the Assamese people and serves not only as a time for celebration and thanksgiving but also as a platform for cultural exchange and mutual understanding among communities.

He further noted that Mizoram has its own rich tradition of festivals, prominently Chapchar Kut, Mim Kut, and Pawl Kut, all of which are celebrated with great enthusiasm. He pointed out the cultural parallels between Bihu and Chapchar Kut, both of which are agricultural festivals, though observed during different seasons. The Speaker encouraged more cultural engagement between the Mizo and Assamese communities and underscored the role of Assam in sustaining India’s agricultural diversity and food security, expressing hope for continued cooperation in the future.

Rongali Bihu, also known as Bohag Bihu, is widely regarded as the Assamese New Year celebration. It is a festive occasion signifying the beginning of the agricultural season and is observed with traditional music, dance, and communal joy.

The event in Mizoram was attended by several dignitaries including Prof. Dibakar Deka, Vice-Chancellor of Mizoram University; Prof. Pranab Chandra Kalita; Dr. Firdoos Jaman, President of the Assam Cultural Society; Prof. Kalyan Sarma, General Secretary of the Assam Cultural Society; and Pu Bikram Kumar Das, Chairman of the Rongali Bihu Celebration Committee 2025 and Finance Secretary of the Assam Cultural Society.

The celebration featured a range of cultural performances and traditional presentations that brought together the Assamese diaspora and local well-wishers in a vibrant display of unity and festivity.
