Parbung, April 21, 2025, Virthli (ONP): Among the many ways our people have lived with the land, Ru Vuok - the old, indigenous method and trusted way of catching fish remains one of the most cherished traditions of the hill tribes. Recently, the Hmar youth of the Hmarram region in Pherzawl District came together for a grand harvest in the Tuibum river basin, a time of joy, hard work, and community spirit.
The Tuibum River, with its strong and generous flow, has long been known to our people as a place of abundance. It is no ordinary river, it gives life and sustenance, offering fish that are not only rare in other waters but also richer in taste. From chêngkawl (river snail) to âi (crab), kaikuong (prawn), ulâwng (tadpole), and many more, the Tuibum is a blessing to those who live by it. The catch from this river is always prized tastier, cleaner, and deeply rooted in our way of life.
The river begins its journey in H.S. Damdiei village of Pherzawl District and flows southward, touching and nourishing many lands - Pherzawl, Taithu, Parbung, Talan, Serhmun, Lungthulien, Leisen, Senvon, and Parvachawm before joining the great Tuivai River. For generations, the Tuibum has run through our hills and hearts, and to this day, its waters connect our people, our villages, and our stories.
