Press Release

Pherzawl, June 1, 2017: The Pherzawl District Development Committee, which is endorsed by various tribes like the Kukis, Hmars, Vaipheis, Simtes, Mizos, etc., today issued the following statements on issues concerning the development of the young district.

1. Pherzawl District Development Committee submitted an invitation-cum-reminder to the Chief Minister of Manipur via the Chief Minister Secretariat (General section Receipt No. 174 & 175, dated 23.05.2017). However, there is still no reply from either the Chief Minister himself or his office till today. In view of this, the people of Pherzawl in general are apprehensive about the new government’s wait-and-watch attitude when it comes to Pherzawl District. The people are beginning to ask whether Pherzawl District really comes under the state of Manipur or the new government is under the impression that the young district created by the previous government actually comes under the jurisdiction of Mizoram. The people are demanding an immediate answer from their government. We, members of the PDDC, however are appealing to members of the public to patiently wait for the government with great hope and expectations.
2. In view of minor confusion created by vested interests on the issue of Pherzawl District headquarters, the PDDC stands firmly by its earlier commitment that Pherzawl District Hqrs shall remain in Pherzawl. We have already stated this before the government that this issue is non-negotiable. Every district level office must function from the district headquarters. In the meantime, we appeal once again to the Government of Manipur to immediately meet the demands of the people of Pherzawl District (already intimidated to the government via several memoranda in December 2016 and in May 2017) which include – sufficient staff, adequate infrastructure, gazette notification on district boundary among others.
3. We again extend an invitation to the Honourbale Chief Minister, Pu N. Biren Singh, to visit Pherzawl District, via the media, in order to educate himself about the ground realities in this remote district of the state. The people, however, have one humble request – We appeal to Pu Biren to travel by road till Pherzawl, either from Jiribam or from Churachandpur town. Right now, we need a chief minister whose foot is firmly on the ground to understand our plight. We are sure, Pu Biren will also realise that Pherzawl District like its sister district of Kangpokpi needs a Special Package in order to bring development across the state.
