11 killed, 48 houses damaged due to landslide in Mizoram

Aizawl, 13 June, 2017, Virthli (ONP): At least eleven people have been killed in Aizawl’s Zemabawk locality and Mizoram’s Tlabung sub-division bordering Bangladesh when houses were swept away by massive landslide triggered by incessant rains that lashed the state since Monday.
As many as 48 houses have also been damaged by landslide in different parts of the state, Sate Disaster Management and Rehabilitation department officials said Tuesday.
 Officials said that one person was feared dead and one other missing when two houses collapsed due to landslide at Zemabawk area on Tuesday. A search operation is one to recover the missing person, they said.
Another sources also said that a building in Phairuang village in Mizoram's Lunglei district collapsed when swept by landslide. The incident occurred on last night when a condolence meeting was going on in the building.
Three people died on the spot. The victims were identified as Biro Botro (55), Daria (62) and Rai Mahinko ( 50). They were believed to be swept away by flood along with the deceased who have been mourned in the night. While volunteers have recovered one body, the bodies of two others and the person who is being mourned are yet to be recovered, sources said.
In another tragic incident, at least seven people have been reportedly died due to collapse of houses triggered by landslide. The victims belonged to two villages- Marpara 'S' and Changpui within Tlabung sub-division in Lunglei district. While two bodies have been recovered, five others are yet to be located, sources from Tlabung said.
Incessant rains that hit the landlocked state of Mizoram since Monday also triggered landslide at several places blocking many highways.
Unofficial sources said that at least 7 houses were collapsed in Aizawl due to landslide triggered by incessant rains.
According to officials of State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation department, at least 48 houses have been damaged, 11 in Aizawl, 10 at Dapchhuah village in Mamit district, 10 in Siaha district and 17 others in other parts of the state due landslide and flood caused by continuous rainfall. 27 houses have also been evacuated in different parts of the state, they said.
National Hihgway-54 between Aizawl and Lunglei was blocked at Tuirial village due to mudslide and several highways have also been blocked due to landslide, sources said.
