IMPHAL, Jun 11: With a total tally of 46 seats, ruling Congress party has emerged as the single largest party after the end of counting of votes for the ADC election held on June 1.

NPF scored a close second by winning 43 seats while BJP which is in power at the Centre won 21 seats to take the third position.

Out of the 144 total seats, Independent candidates won 34 but JD-U drew blank in the score sheet.

Notably, 11 candidates were declared elected unchallenged even before the election was held. Seven of them are Congress candidates, three are NPF and one BJP.

Each ADC would have 26 Members inclusive of two Government nominees. Political parties which won 14 seats out of 26 would form the ADC.

District-wise counting results are INC-2, BJP-1, NPF -17 and Ind-4 in Ukhrul; INC-1, NPF-11, BJP-8 and Ind-4 in Senapatii; INC-10, BJP-5, NPF-8 and Ind-1 in Tamenglong; INC-5, BJP-1 and Ind-18 in Churachandpur; INC-11, BJP-2, NPF-5 and Ind-6 in Chandel and INC-17, BJP-4, NPF-2 and Ind-1 in Sadar Hills ADC.

The election results indicate that the Congress party is in a position to form ADC without support from other parties or Independent Members only in Sadar Hills.

Congress won 17 seats in Sadar Hills ADC. Likewise, NPF can form ADC by itself only in Ukhrul where they won similar number of seats.

BJP is not in a position to form ADC by itself anywhere.

Some after the counting of votes finished at around 5 am, all the elected NPF candidates were called to NPF High Command Office, Kohima.

Although the exact reasons of their trip to Kohima could not be established, they were likely to discuss internal party policies on forming ADC and governance at grassroots level.

For the first time in their history, NPF would be governing tribal people of Manipur at the grassroots level at least in Ukhrul district.
