The National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) is a premier national center of excellence in rural development has announces its fourth fully residential One-year ‘Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Development Management (PGDRDM)’ with an aim to create a committed and competent cadre of Rural Development professionals in the country.

ELIGIBILITY: Graduation in any discipline from a recognised University. Students who are in the final year and expect to complete all the requirements of graduation before 1st August, 2011 may also apply.
SELECTION PROCESS: Selection of candidates will be made through a process of All-India Entrance Test which will test the verbal, quantitative and analytical competencies of the students including written English Language Skills. Group Discussion and Personal Interviews will be conducted for the short-listed students.

TOTAL NO. OF SEATS: 60 (may undergo some changes depending upon the availability of infrastructure. Of these, up to 15 seats may be allotted to the in-service Indian and international candidates).

COURSE FEE: Indian Students Rs. 1.60 lakh

SCHOLARSHIPS: Merit and need based scholarships will be made available to deserving Indian students. The North Eastern Council, Shillong, has fully funded the North Eastern students selected for the PGDRDM in the past. Similar financial support to the admitted students domiciled in the North Eastern region is likely for the current year as well. Study loans will also be facilitated by the NIRD for the needy Indian students.

RESERVATION: Reservations for the students of the SC/ST/OBC (Non-creamy layer) and Persons with Disability (PWD) will be made as per Government of India’s policies.

The Union Human Resource Development Ministry and the Finance Ministry has approved the revision of Junior Fellowship and Senior Research Fellowship for the NET qualified candidates, which will come into effect from April 1, 2010. Fellowships have been revised from Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 16,000 (JRF) a month for the first two years and from Rs. 14,000 to Rs. 18,000 (SRF) for the remaining three years. The Finance Ministry has also sought from it a separate proposal for increasing the number of researchers from 3,200 to 6,400.
Extension of the fellowship beyond 2 years will be subjected to satisfactory progress reports of the fellows, which would be reviewed by the host instituions at the end of two years through committees constituted by their heads

House rent allowance will be admissible to both Junior and Senior research fellows where hostel accommodation is not provided by the host institutions. Those selected Junior and Senior research fellows would also be encouraged to register for higher degrees, for which the tuition fee would be reimbursed by the UGC.

New syllabus for Civil Services Prelims 2011 out

New Delhi(TNN): Introducing a level-playing field for aspirants of India's elite services -- IAS, IFS, IPS and others -- the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has come out with a new syllabus for the 2011 preliminary examination, which, besides aptitude and other skills, will also test candidates on their knowledge of "environmental ecology, biodiversity and climate change".

The aspirants will also be tested for English language comprehension skills. As of now, the English language test is part of qualifying papers without having any weightage in the civil services (Main) examination. But its introduction in the preliminary level could mean a brighter chance for all those whose English language skills are better, to qualify for the Main.

The new syllabus will have two common papers with equal weightage (200 marks each), unlike the current system which gives more weightage to subject paper (300 marks) than the common general awareness paper (150 marks). It will replace the present system, which has been in force since 1979.

The proposal to change the system had been pending for long as most of the government panels had advocated greater emphasis on "aptitude" of candidates than knowledge of their subjects, arguing that the specialists or experts of any particular subject may not necessarily be good civil servants unless they have actual inclination towards it.

"The new syllabus will provide a level-playing field and equity, since all candidates will have to attempt common papers unlike the current format which provides for only one common paper," an official said.
The first paper under the new syllabus will be more or less like the current general awareness paper, with additional issues such as climate change and biodiversity.

The second paper -- being introduced by replacing the optional (subject) paper -- will have aptitude, data interpretation and English language comprehension skills, which is more or less on the lines of MBA entrance test in India.

The second paper comprises general comprehension; inter-personal skills, including communication skills; logical reasoning and analytical ability; decision making and problem solving; general mental ability; basic numbers and their relations (secondary level) and data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables and data sufficiency). The English language comprehension skills will also be of secondary level.

The first paper, on the other hand, will test civil services aspirants on current events of national and international importance, Indian history, Indian and world geography, Indian polity and governance, economic and social development and general science, besides environmental ecology, biodiversity and climate change that do not require subject specialization.

The new syllabus is only meant for the preliminary examination, which shortlists candidates for the CS (Main) Examination, being conducted every year by the UPSC.

"The syllabus for the CS (Main) Examination will also be changed in due course. As of now, the existing syllabus will be used for the Main examination in 2011 as well," a senior official of the ministry of personnel said.

National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination will be conducted by the Union Public Service Commission on 17th April, 2011 for admission to the Army, Navy and Air Force wings of the NDA for the 127th Course and for the 89th Indian Naval Academy Course (INAC) commencing from 30th December 2011. The candidates joining Indian Naval Academy would undergo 4 years B Tech Course and would also be given an opportunity to join Technical Branch of the Navy subject to availability of vacancies.

The approximate number of vacancies to be filled on the results of this examination will be 335 (195 for the Army, 39 for Navy, 66 for the Air Force and 35 for the Indian Naval Academy 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme).
Educational Qualifications :
(i) For Army wing of National Defence Academy :- 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
(ii) For Air Force and Naval Wings of National Defence Academy and for the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy :- 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equilvalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
Candidates who are appearing in the 12th Class under the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination can also apply for this examination.

Actress Minka Kelly became a Los Angeles nurse so she could pay her bills while she was chasing her modeling dreams. The caring star didn’t want to waste time waiting tables while she went for talent auditions and so she spent a year working at a hospital. “I was a receptionist at this doctor’s office and I became friends with this scrub nurse there because I was fascinated by the surgery and I wasn’t squeamish,” she said in a recent video interview with George Lopez on “Lopez Tonight”.
I got fired from that job… and I learned that going to school to be a scrub nurse was just over a year. I became a surgical technician, a scrub nurse… I worked a six-month externship at California Hospital.”
Sharing what she felt about her mom, who was entirely her family while she was growing up, Kelly has this to say:
She would come home at like three, four o’clock in the morning, and sometimes she would have a really great night, and so she would wake me up in the middle of the night and we’d go to Ralphs and go grocery shopping. And that was so much fun. We’d have the whole grocery store to ourselves, and we would have a blast and buy a hundred dollars in groceries. And it was just the best day ever. The best day.
